Too many people are talked into demonizing their pasts.
I read about a doctor who worked with the really hardcore teams of medical volunteers, who go to the outlying homeless camps where a lot of people live who can’t come in for treatment without guaranteeing arrest ~ often for nothing more than accumulated unpayable camping tickets.
“I believe I went a little crazy, ma’am,” one of her clients humbly told her.
She reached out to him. “We all do, at one point or another,” she replied. “It’s what we do with what we learn, afterward, that counts.”
