Sometimes, life feels like a beautifully choreographed dance, where each step seems destined and every encounter feels inevitable. Other times, it feels like an open floor, where we’re free to move in any direction, choosing our steps as we go.
This dynamic between destiny and free will forms the essence of the human experience. Are we the dancers, free to make our moves, or are we simply following a rhythm set by faith? The answer, as it often is with life’s great mysteries, lies somewhere in between.
The Thread of Destiny
From ancient mythologies to modern philosophies, destiny has been portrayed as a powerful force shaping our lives. The Greeks envisioned the Moirai, or Faith, who spun, measured, and cut the thread of life, determining when it began, how long it would last, and how it would end. In many religious traditions, a higher power is believed to guide us toward a purpose we may not fully understand but are destined to fulfill.
Destiny, in this sense, represents the cosmic blueprint—the larger plan that governs major events, from the people we meet to the challenges we face. It’s the unexpected encounter that changes everything, the life-altering decision we never saw coming, or the serendipity that feels too perfect to be coincidence.
But if destiny holds so much sway, where does that leave our choices? Are we mere players in a game with a set outcome, or do we hold some power over our path?
The Power of Free Will
Free will stands in sharp contrast to the idea of faith. It is the belief that we have the freedom to choose our actions, shape our lives, and chart our own course. We are not bound by a predestined script; instead, we are the authors of our own stories. With each decision—whether trivial or profound—we exercise this freedom.
Free will gives us agency. It’s the power to adapt, change, and grow. If destiny sets the stage and provides a general framework, free will determines how we engage with the moments life presents us. Do we accept opportunities or let them pass by? Do we meet challenges with resilience, or do we crumble under their weight?
Our choices ripple outward, affecting not only our personal journey but the lives of those around us. Like a dancer on the floor, we can choose our steps, improvising within the rhythm life provides.
The Dance Between Choice and Fate
The real beauty lies not in pitting destiny against free will but in recognizing how they work in harmony. Life is neither entirely preordained nor completely open-ended. It is a dance between the two, with moments when destiny leads and times when free will take the spotlight.
Think of destiny as the music playing in the background—sometimes soft and subtle, other times loud and insistent. It sets the tone, guiding you to key moments in your life: the job you’re meant to take, the person you’re destined to meet, and the challenges you’re born to face. But how you move to that music is entirely up to you. Some people move with grace, embracing the beat with fluidity, while others resist, feeling out of step.
Even when faced with events that feel destined, our response is what shapes our experience. Two people might face the same challenge, but their reactions—born out of free will—lead to entirely different outcomes. One might see a setback as the end of a dream, while the other transforms it into an opportunity for growth.
Finding Flow in the Dance
To navigate life between choice and fate is to find flow—the ability to harmonize with what life presents while remaining conscious of our power to choose. The flow requires trust. Trust that life has a rhythm, even if we can’t always hear it clearly.
Trust that we can adapt our steps to the changing tempo. And, above all, trust that in the space between destiny and free will, we can create something beautiful.
The Interplay of Purpose and Freedom
While some events in life may seem beyond our control, free will provides us with the power to imbue those moments with meaning. Perhaps destiny brought us to a crossroads, but it is our choice of which path to take. Perhaps fate caused us to stumble, but it is free will that allows us to rise again, stronger and more determined.
As we dance between choice and fate, we begin to see that life is not about control or surrender in isolation—it’s about knowing when to embrace one and when to lean on the other.
When we stop seeing destiny and free will as opposing forces and start viewing them as partners in the dance of life, we unlock the potential to create a truly meaningful existence.
Conclusion: Mastering the Dance
In the end, the dance of destiny and free will is less about finding clear answers and more about embracing the journey. We are both choreographed by forces beyond our understanding and free to make our own moves.
We may not always know when to follow and when to lead, but that is part of the beauty of life—learning to trust the process, make deliberate choices, and find a balance between surrender and control.
The question is not whether we are subject to fate or driven by choice, but how well we can navigate the rhythm of both. The dance continues, and every step we take brings us closer to understanding the delicate balance between the two.
Consider this theoretical scenario:
Before incarnating, we sit with celestial counselors to consider ways of setting up the coming lifetime for optimum learning, growth and service.
Using our free will, we create those major crossroads which later seem to us unavoidably predestined, each one loaded with free will choices in that moment which will indicate our progress and move us toward that growth ~ either by keeping us back to relearn something, or boosting us forward.
Then free will and predestination are in harmony indeed: seen from this perspective they may actually be one and the same thing!
